The Dragons are Back

I am the volunteer committee co-chair for this year's Oshkosh Community Dragonboat Race and Festival. We need your help! If you are interested in volunteering, please read the information below and complete the online volunteer form. Thank you.

Did you see the Oshkosh Community Dragonboat Races last year? Over 2,000 people gathered at Riverside Park & the Leach Amphitheater to volunteer, paddle and cheer the boats as they raced for bragging rights. This year over forty teams will gather and compete for the first place spot.

This year UW Oshkosh, The Grand and YMCA will again host this community event that includes races, events, activities, food, beverages and fun. As a co-chair for volunteers, I am seeking people to volunteer for at least a three hour period and assist with the practice or actual race day activities.

The needs are for both the practice days, where teams have a chance to learn how to paddle and practice (September 7th-9th), and the actual day of the event (September 22nd).

Practice Dates
Fri., Sept. 7th: 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (UW Oshkosh Boat Landing)
Sat., Sept. 8th: 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. (UW Oshkosh Boat Landing)
Sun., Sept. 9th: 8:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. (UW Oshkosh Boat Landing)

Race Day
Sat., Sept. 22nd: 7:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Riverside Park and Leach Amphitheater)

The various volunteer position descriptions can be viewed online. If you are able and interested in volunteering for this community event, please sign up online.

Volunteers for Saturday, September 22nd will be invited to an optional Volunteer Meeting and Paddle Party on Friday, September 21st beginning at 9:00 p.m. at the Grand Opera House to review the position responsibilities and give an overview of the festival and grounds.

This event was quite a success last year, and it could not have been done without the help of volunteers. If you have questions, please contact me.

Healthy Wisconsin forum

On Wednesday, August 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, there will be an open forum on Healthy Wisconsin, the health care plan introduced by Senate Democrats.

Health care is one of the most important issues, and this forum is a way for citizens to learn more about one of the existing proposals in our state. I hope to see you there.

Statement text

As indicated in an article in today's Oshkosh Northwestern, I will be attending tonight's closed session meeting. Below is the text of the statement I gave at last night's council meeting.

There has been a lot of discussion concerning my participation in the deliberations regarding the City Manager. Unfortunately, some issues have become unclear, and I would like to clarify some concerns that have been raised.

I want to make it clear that it was my decision to leave the July 30th closed session. My decision was based on the advice of the council’s attorney. I was advised not to participate due to public statements I made regarding city leadership. Given that advice, I felt at that time the best decision possible was to leave the meeting. I was not kicked out, and there are no laws that prevent me from attending and participating.

I will, however, be participating in tomorrow’s closed session, where I have been informed that the council will review a possible alternative resolution.

I also would like to thank those who have offered their support and encouragement during the past two weeks.
