Local elections

It's hard to believe it was a little over a year ago this weekend that I officially began my campaign for the Oshkosh Common Council. Where did the time go?!?

Here's a link to an Oshkosh Northwestern article about the upcoming local elections (including who's up for re-election). According to the article, only incumbents Burk Tower and Paul Esslinger have taken out nomination papers for the Common Council. Nomination papers can be obtained from the City Clerk's office, County Clerk's office or the School District office, depending on the position sought for election.

Important dates for the 2006 elections:
01/03:
Last day for candidates to file nomination papers
01/06: Last day to challenge nomination papers
01/10: Election officials draw candidate names for primary ballot order
02/21: Spring primary election (if necessary)
TBD: Election officials draw candidate names for general election ballot order
04/04: Spring general election

Will this year's election turn out a large number of Common Council candidates like the last, or will the absence of a mayoral election garner less attention? I hope the latter is not the case! What are your thoughts?

  • It looks like Brian Poeschl's not running this year, at least according to an article on the Eye on Oshkosh web site(http://eyeonoshkosh.com/article.php?story=20051204214925931).

According to Tony Palmeri's web site, this is what Brian had to say, "After I went to the council meeting on the budget final, I decided there are too many yahoos up there that just have no common sense and I don't feel like I want to battle that again in my lifetime. It's not worth the time and effort, and the vote would only be 5-2 again all over."

Brian also recently sent an email to Alex Hummel laughing at a bad situation for the city (http://everydayeditor.blogspot.com/2005/11/this-just-in-email-from-brian-poeschl.html).

We're better off without him running!

  • Anonymous-
I disagree with Brian's comments and his 'assessment' of the current council. However, if he feels it's "not worth the time and effort," then it's better he not run for election. We need council members who are willing to put in the necessary time and effort.

  • Hello there all. I am writing this to solicit anyone to run for or help find someone for the 5 open seats for Winnebago County Board especially the two with in the city of Oshkosh.

I am not starting this to have a discussion on how big the board should be or how the county board has done the last year or two. Simply to find able minded people to serve on the County Board.

Simply someone trying to find candidates to at least have 50 people in the district decide than the a chairman from outside the district.
The open seats are for those people who vote at Shapiro school and
those who vote at the fire station on Snell Road. The two in the Neenah are the central part of Neenah those who vote a Neenah Fire Station and/or at Wilson School.
If anyone needs more info about the County Board feel free to contact me - my number is 920-426-1051 and email is mjn304@hotmail.com.
